Most people when they close their eyes and think of St. Lucia they envision the beautiful Pitons with the sun setting in the background. And if they listen closely they will hear talented artistes such as the hidden gem Shemmy Johannes aka Shemmy J.
Shemmy J, familiarly known in St. Lucia by his catch phrase “Okay Lay Lay”, is a young talented Virgo from Castries St. Lucia. He first made his mark on the Saint Lucian Soca scene at the age of 16, when he co-wrote another local artiste, J Mouse’s 2014 hit song “Hurt It”, which went on to win The Road March Title for the Carnival season. With his brief time in the industry he’s already written songs for many renowned local Saint Lucian artistes such as; Sedale, Imran Nerdy and Kisha.
The young artiste’s debut as a soca sensation came about from his performance of the song “Like a Star” on the popular Island Vibes Riddim. Shemmy further solidified himself as one of the more talented Saint Lucian Soca Artistes, after capping off a massive 2017 season with a first runner up finish, at the groovy monarch finals with partner Imran Nerdy, on the Afrobeat infused soca hit, “Bouncing”.
Since then Shemmy J has progressed steadily as a writer and artiste, with 2018 seeing yet another big release; “Start a Fyah”, that has been making waves internationally and which took him on his first U.S Tour as an artiste.
Shemmy admits that he loves all music, but his first love was reggae during the earlier stages of his musical career. However, in a move to reflect and represent his beautiful island he made a conscious decision to change genres, picking Soca over everything.
Shemmy J is on a constant quest to improve himself as an artiste and to grow his brand and one can definitely expect greater things to come from this extraordinary artiste.
